40th Anniversary Mustang - The Pony Car at Forty

2004 marked Mustang’s 40th Anniversary. For a muscle car that started out being billed as “affordable yet stylish” in April of 1964, the basic personality of the car has stayed the same for forty years.

The different Mustang models available for 2004 were made for people who love very fast muscle cars as well as for people who prefer a stylish and comfortable sports car.

Only 5700 anniversary Mustang editions were built. The front fenders of the anniversary Mustang have anniversary badges on them and upgrades are obvious in the interior and exterior of both the GT and the V-6 models. One upgrade is that the convertibles have a better top that is made of medium parchment. This helps it to last longer and reduce sound. Only three colors are available with this option. These colors all complement the performance stripes on the body of the car, which has enhanced wheels and an enhanced interior as well.

Last One Standing - The Mustang Out Lasts the Competition

The 2002 Mustang saw many changes, among with are the changing of the sub model names to Standard, Deluxe, and Premium. 2002 is also when most of the Ford Mustang’s major competition disappeared. The Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird both stopped being made after 2002. This left the Mustang as the only “pony car” on the market.

Approximately 200,000 people become owners of Mustangs every year. One of the biggest innovations made by Mustang in 2002 was the Cobra, even though technically it was a 2003 model that just happened to appear late in 2002.

The Fifth Generation Mustang

The fifth generation of Mustangs is still incredibly popular, probably because the features are very similar to that of the original 1964 Mustang.

Actor Steve McQueen in the 1968 move “Bullitt” drove a 1968 Mustang GT. The car was used in a chase scene through San Francisco. Because of this, the movie has a big following that Mustang took advantage of with the release of the 2001 edition of the Mustang GT. While the 2001 and 1968 Mustang GT are not exactly the same car, they do share some similar qualities, namely a similar solid rear axle suspension and front engine layout.

One major difference is the engines. The 2001 Bullitt has 281 cubic inches, 4.6 liter single overhead cam V8. The 2001 model is sportier and more powerful because of some small changes in the engine and chassis. The exterior was enhanced in ways the ‘68 GT was not, as well as an improved interior on the Bullitt.

The 2001 Mustang Bullitt comes in three colors, including black, true blue, and dark highland green. The green color is similar to the GT’s green color in the movie, which is the inspiration behind the color’s return. The 2001’s five spoke alloy wheels were also used in the 1968 Mustang GT. The back of the Mustang says “Bullitt” while the gas cap is brushed aluminum. Even though it is not exactly functional, the hood scoop adds muscle to the car, and helps make the Bullitt unique.
