First introduced in 1968 the Ford Mustang 428 Cobra Jet was the Mustang Muscle car fans had been asking for. It was Ford’s answer to the bigger motors its competitors at Dodge, Plymouth, and GM were producing. It was the motor package many Mustang fans had been asking for and a value added choice in comparison to the 427 which at $755 was rather pricey by sixties standards. It sported larger valve heads and shared the racing legend 427’s intake manifold.
The Cobra Jet made use of a ram-air induction system with a functional hood scoop that channeled air directly to the 735-cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor. The engine would produce an astounding 410 horsepower even though Ford rated it at a much lower 355 horses. The 428 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet package was available on the Mustang Fastbacks and coupes. You could get the option of either a three speed or four speed automatic transmission.
The option would go on to impress not only street racer fans but the drag pros too. It would dominate in 68 at the NHRA Winter Nationals and turned many a competitors heads. The Cobra Jet would become a major choice in 69 of the casual racer and pro racers a like. 1969 would see the last of the 428, as it would be replaced in 1970 by the 429 Cobra Jet engine. The 429 would end up comparable in total horsepower output and keep many Mustang fans happy but many still preferred the performance and raw power of the 428.
This week’s commercial round up is a look at the Cobra Jet and a few other Mustang commercials wound together into one video. I had hoped to cover the 1970 Stang but I am having a hard time locating any from that year. So, lets take a more complete look at the 1969 Mustangs again.
