Ford Mustang History and Development 1985 the SVO Mustang
For many, there is no finer car then the Ford Mustang. While it has never been considered an exotic car, it has captured the hearts of men and women for 40 years. The Ford Mustang has an interesting history.
Looking briefly at the fact that 1984 saw very few changes for the Ford Mustang, with much being carried over from the previous year, developmental problems killed the arrival of the HO V8 that was to be fuel injected and boost 165 hp with an automatic transmission. There were also revisions in the suspension timing and Ford making a midyear “GT-350″ 20th anniversary package for the convertibles and hatchbacks. Nevertheless, 1985 brought about many changes to the Mustang. For example, it was in 1985 that we all saw the arrival of the SVO Mustang.
This lovely SVO with a unique appearance, namely the single square headlamps set in the grill free front end, not to mention the dual-plane rear spoiler. The SVO was powered by an intercooled version of the turbocharged 2.3 L four rated with an impressive 175 horsepower. The SVO also was equipped with 16″ wheels on five-lug hubs. The four-wheel disc brakes provided better stopping. Priced at $15,596, it was an agile, quick, and expensive car. Technically impressive, it was not as fast as the V8 Mustang GT and it did not quite make the big sales list.
The Mustang GT also got a few new components such as a new grille, one that was simply a large slit between the two pairs of headlights. In 1985, they also gave the Mustang GT new 15″ cast aluminum wheels shod with P225/60VR15 “Gatorback” tires. With a 210 horsepower thanks to the serpentine single belt accessory drive system and revised cam the 5.0 engine has a four-barrel carbureted form.
